Oncosurgery

Oncosurgery, also known as surgical oncology, is a specialized field of medicine focused on the surgical treatment of cancer. It plays a crucial role in the comprehensive management of cancer, working alongside other disciplines such as medical oncology, radiation oncology, and pathology to provide patients with personalized and effective care. Oncosurgeons are highly trained specialists who perform surgical procedures to diagnose, stage, remove, and manage cancerous tumors and related conditions.

Role of Oncosurgery:

The primary goal of oncosurgery is to remove cancerous tumors and affected tissues while preserving as much healthy tissue and organ function as possible. Oncosurgeons collaborate closely with oncologists and other healthcare professionals to develop individualized treatment plans tailored to each patient’s specific cancer type, stage, and overall health.

They use a combination of surgical techniques, advanced technologies, and multidisciplinary approaches to achieve optimal outcomes and improve patient survival rates.

Conditions Treated by Oncosurgery:

Oncosurgery addresses a wide range of cancer types and related conditions, including but not limited to:

  • Solid Tumors: This includes tumors in organs such as the breast, lung, colon, prostate, liver, pancreas, and kidneys. Oncosurgeons perform tumor resections, partial or total organ removals (e.g., mastectomy for breast cancer, nephrectomy for kidney cancer), and lymph node dissections to treat solid tumors.
  • Hematological Malignancies: Oncosurgery may be involved in procedures like lymph node biopsies, splenectomies (removal of the spleen), and bone marrow aspirations or biopsies for hematological cancers such as lymphoma, leukemia, and multiple myeloma.
  • Gastrointestinal Cancers: This includes surgeries for esophageal cancer, gastric cancer, colorectal cancer, and liver cancer. Procedures like colectomy, gastrectomy, and hepatectomy are common in the management of gastrointestinal malignancies.
  • Head and Neck Cancers: Oncosurgery addresses tumors in the oral cavity, throat, larynx, and neck region. Surgeries like laryngectomy, glossectomy, and neck dissections may be performed for head and neck cancers.
  • Soft Tissue Sarcomas: These are tumors arising from soft tissues such as muscles, fat, nerves, and blood vessels. Oncosurgeons perform wide local excisions and limb-sparing surgeries for soft tissue sarcomas.
  • Reconstructive Surgery: Oncosurgeons may collaborate with plastic surgeons to perform reconstructive procedures following tumor removal, such as breast reconstruction after mastectomy or skin grafts for facial cancers.

Surgical Techniques and Innovations:

Oncosurgery utilizes various surgical techniques and innovations to optimize cancer treatment and patient outcomes:

  • Minimally Invasive Surgery: Techniques like laparoscopy and robotic-assisted surgery enable surgeons to perform complex procedures through small incisions, leading to faster recovery, reduced pain, and shorter hospital stays.
  • Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsy: This technique helps determine the spread of cancer to nearby lymph nodes, guiding the extent of lymph node dissection during surgery.
  • Intraoperative Imaging: Advanced imaging technologies like intraoperative MRI, CT, and ultrasound help surgeons visualize tumors and critical structures in real-time during surgery, improving surgical precision.
  • Targeted Therapy: Oncosurgeons may administer targeted therapies directly to tumors during surgery or collaborate with medical oncologists to integrate targeted therapies into overall cancer treatment plans.

Patient Care and Recovery:

Before surgery, patients undergo comprehensive evaluations, including imaging studies, biopsies, and staging tests, to assess tumor extent and surgical candidacy. Oncosurgeons work closely with anesthesia teams to ensure patient safety during surgical procedures. Post-operative care focuses on pain management, wound healing, and monitoring for potential complications. Rehabilitation and supportive care services help patients recover and regain function after surgery.
